MICHAEL PFLEGHAAR

Michigan based painter Michael Pfleghaar is well known for his interior subjects depicting animated mid-century furniture and accessories, bringing such things as an Eames lounge chair to life. Pfleghaar's new body of work depicts modern landmarks in Palm Springs, California. Pfleghaar skillfully captures the optimistic spirit of his architectural subjects as well as the magical quality of the light and landscape of their environment.

“My most central interest is in the inherent beauty of form – in nature, in manmade objects and in architecture. The images and forms that I come into contact with daily so often strike me as achingly beautiful. I am inspired by everything from faded walls and climbing vines to telephone poles and knotted yarn. I try to emulate that simple quality of discovered and seen beauty in the world around me. My work is influenced by and derivative of Abstract Expressionism, Color Field Painting, the Arts & Crafts Movement, media, design, architecture, science, figurative art, textiles, insects and flowers. I am interested in the possibilities inherent in painting. I carry a strong, romantic belief in its tradition.”

CATHIE JOY YOUNG

“My work balances between the expression of hope versus the expression of despair having aspects of comedy, whimsy, tragedy and a skewed perception of an imagined world. These paintings come from a body of work which I began about a year after the start of the war in Iraq. None of the content or composition was preconceived. I find that the process leads to the content, and the meaning reveals itself gradually to me. Sometimes long after a piece is completed.”
